What to Do After Getting Your Windows Tinted

Let’s talk about aftercare for tinted windows. Having your windows tinted is a smart investment. To avoid bubbling, peeling or any other potential issues, proper aftercare is needed. In the days and weeks following installation, aftercare is what separates flawless, long lasting results from premature wear. This guide covers everything you need to know, from initial curing times to long term maintenance, so you can enjoy your professionally tinted windows for many years.

Have You Just Had Your Windows Tinted?

Window tinting film is a water-mounted product, meaning it could take up to 2 weeks to completely dry.

During this drying period it is completely normal to see small water bubbles and/or a light cloudiness or haze in the film. Do not roll the newly tinted windows down for a minimum of 5 days after your window tint has been installed.

No exceptions!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Wait minimum 5 days before rolling down your windows to allow the film to fully cure
  • Do not clean the inside of your windows for at least 30 days
  • Avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Use only tint-safe glass cleaners
  • You may notice haze or small water bubbles — this is normal and will clear up
  • Park indoors or in the shade to assist the curing process

About Curing Time & Early Care

After your window tint is installed, it will need time to properly cure.

The curing process allows the adhesive layers of the film to bond with the surface of the glass, keeping the film smooth, clear, and bubble-free. Temperature and humidity levels affect the duration of the curing process, but most installations will completely cure within 5 to 30 days.

First 5 Days After Installation:

During this critical initial phase, avoid rolling down your windows entirely. Doing so can disrupt the film’s alignment and cause peeling or lifting around the edges. It’s also normal to see some cloudiness, haziness, or small water bubbles beneath the film—this is moisture trapped during installation and it will evaporate on its own as the film cures.

5–14 Days After Installation:

By this point, the film will begin to settle and bond more securely. You can begin gently rolling the windows down as needed, but still avoid aggressive cleaning or applying any pressure to the film. Refrain from using any window defrosters or heating elements during this time if possible.

30 Days After Installation:

Your tint should now be fully cured and bonded to the glass. At this point, you can clean the windows more regularly and resume normal use—just make sure to use tint-safe cleaning methods to preserve the finish and clarity of the film.

How do I maintain my tinted windows? After curing for 30 days you can use a soft microfibre cloth to clean your windows. Use only cleaners approved for use with window tinting film.

Cleaning Guidelines

After your window tint has fully cured (typically after 30 days) it’s safe to begin a regular aftercare routine. Maintaining your tint’s condition means using only products and techniques that can be safely used on window tinting film. We really can not overemphasize that premature or improper cleaning can lead to scratches, peeling, or discolouration.

1. Only Use Cleaners Formulated for Use With Tint Film

Always use ammonia-free, pH-neutral cleaners specifically formulated for tinted windows. Your favourite household glass cleaners most likely contain ammonia (or similar abrasive), which has proven to degrade a film’s colour and adhesive. To be safe, choose products labeled as “tint-safe” or ask somebody from our knowledgable sales team for help.

2. Choose the Right Cloth and Material

Next, make sure to avoid using cloths made from abrasive materials or paper towels, newspaper, or things like scrub brushes, when cleaning your tinted windows. These can scratch the film’s surface or leave behind fibres. Instead, use a clean microfibre cloth, soft cotton towel, or a dedicated glass-cleaning cloth. To avoid any costly mistakes, keep a separate cloth to use for your tinted windows, avoiding any potential cross-contaminations from other surfaces or products.

3. Spray Onto Your Cloth, Not Your Window

When cleaning it is best to avoid spraying any kind of cleaner directly onto the window film. This can often lead to excess moisture seeping into the film’s edges. In our shop we apply it to the cloth first, then process to clean the window. This gives us more control and prevents any streaking or bubbling at the film’s borders.

4. Clean Carefully, But Clean Regularly

Remember, your tinted windows don’t require any vigorous scrubbing. A delicate touch and simple circular wiping motions are typically all that’s required to remove any dust, fingerprints, or smudges. For the best result, clean your tinted windows every few weeks, or more often if you live in a dusty, high-traffic environment.

Common Aftercare Mistakes to Avoid

Even with high-quality window tint, improper aftercare for tinted windows can shorten its lifespan or cause visible damage. To protect your investment and keep your tint looking factory-fresh, it’s important to avoid these common mistakes, especially in the first few weeks after installation.

Rolling down your windows too soon: Rolling down your windows before they finish curing, especially within the first 3 to 5 days, causes the edges of the tint to peel or shift out of place. Make sure anyone who drives, or rides in the vehicle knows not to roll the windows down for any reason.

Using ammonia-based or harsh cleaners: One of the most common causes of damaged tint is from cleaning it with ammonia based cleaners like Windex or Zep. Ammonia-based cleaners eat at the adhesive layer, causing the film to discolour, bubble, or peel over time. Avoid using any traditional glass cleaners, and a get a film-safe solution with no harsh chemicals or solvents.

Cleaning too soon after installation: Trying to clean your windows before the film has completely cured is another big mistake. Even a gentle cleaning can shift or reposition the film, trap moisture, or cause surface distortion. The best thing you can do is be patient. It is recommended to wait a minimum of 30 days before cleaning the windows.

Using rough or abrasive materials: Another very common problem comes from the use of materials like paper towels, sponges with scrubbing sides, or even a beach towel, with coarse fibre. Surprisingly, these materials can scratch or scuff the surface of the film. The fine scratches accumulate over time, dulling the finish of the film. Always use soft microfibre cloths for the safest and cleanest results.

Seat belts or sharp objects against the glass: It’s often overlooked, but sharp or heavy items can pierce or scratch your window film. Be mindful when releasing seat belts, moving car seats, or loading any cargo. If any hard surfaces manage to hit or rub the edge of the glass it could lead to chips or wear along the border of the film.

Troubleshooting Normal Issues

Even after a proper installation, it’s common for customers to notice visual imperfections or changes in the film during the previously mentioned curing period. Fortunately, most of these issues are temporary and part of the normal bonding process. Here’s what to expect:

  • Hazing or cloudy appearance: In the first few days, it’s normal for your windows to look slightly hazy or cloudy. This is caused by moisture trapped between the film and the glass during installation. As the film cures, the moisture gradually evaporates, leaving behind a smooth, clear finish. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the weather and humidity.
  • Small water bubbles or pockets: You may also notice small air or water bubbles forming beneath the surface. These are usually pockets of trapped moisture that will flatten and disappear as the adhesive sets and the film dries. Avoid pressing or trying to “pop” these bubbles. They’ll resolve on their own with time. Usually, most disappear within the first 30 days.
  • Edges lifting or curling: Slight lifting of the edges usually occurs if the film was somehow disturbed during the curing process or if the windows were rolled down too early. If the lifting is minor and appears to settle back down, it may correct itself when finished curing. However, if the edges begin to peel or do not adhere after the first two weeks, there is a problem.
  • Persistent bubbles or distortion: If after 30 days you still have bubbles, or if you notice distortion interfering with your visibility, it may indicate an installation issue or contamination under the film. In this case, you’d need to speak to your installer. Quality tint work is usually backed by a warranty, so professional follow-up is straightforward and often covered.
  • Light scuffing or swirl marks: Light surface marks can occasionally be seen when viewing the tint at certain angles or under direct light. These are often cosmetic and do not affect performance. They can usually be minimized with proper cleaning using a soft microfiber cloth and tint-safe polish.

Maintenance & Seasonal Care

Proper aftercare for tinted windows should continue long after the film has cured. With the right routine maintenance, your window tint will keep its clarity, performance, and appearance for many years. Let’s take a look at a few different ways you can protect your tint from regular use and harsh Canadian weather.

Regular Cleaning & Upkeep

After the curing period is complete, it is safe to being clean your windows often. Your exact schedule should reflect how often you drive, the conditions you drive in and consider passenger use. Drivers in areas with lots dust and debris will likely require more cleaning than garage-kept vehicles. Your lifestyle also matters. Vehicles transporting young children will likely benefit from more frequent window cleaning than that of a single adult. Regardless of environment or lifestyle, always use ammonia-free, tint-safe cleaners in combination with soft microfibre cloths to prevent scratches and film degradation.

Avoid Prolonged Parking in Direct Sunlight

Although tint is made for combating direct sunlight is recommended to avoid parking for long periods of direct sunlight. Try parking your vehicle underground, or in shaded/covered areas whenever possible. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can gradually wear down the protective top layer of the film. If it’s not possible to stay parked in the shade, try using a front window sunshade to minimize UV exposure and interior heat buildup.

Be Cautious with Ice and Snow

During the freezing cold Canadian winter months, never scrape ice or frost directly from tinted windows. Ice scrapers and other hard plastic tools can cause scratching or lift up the edges of the film. Use the warm air defroster to melt the ice before attempting to wipe the glass with a microfibre cloth or rubber squeegee. Also avoid slamming frozen car doors, as the films layer of adhesive becomes brittle, leading to a separation of film from glass, specifically near any window edges.

Watch for Salt and Road Spray

Winter in Canada is mean. After heavy storms or travelling long distances, salt, slush, and road grime can accumulate around your windows and seals. It’s important to rinse your windows thoroughly when washing your car in the winter, to avoid any salt residue sitting for long periods or spreading to the film, as salt crystals can cause micro-abrasions if wiped off dry.

The Benefits of A Professional Tint Installation

While a DIY tinting kit on Amazon may seem appealing, the differences in quality, longevity, and appearance between a do-it-yourself tint job and a professional installation are significant. Tinting film is a specialized, technical product that requires precision, optimum conditions, and product-specific knowledge and expertise to ensure a flawless finish that can be enjoyed for years.

Precision Cut and Clean Applications: Professional installers use accurate computer-cut templates or hand-cutting techniques tailored to your specific vehicle. That’s why each piece of tint fits perfectly with no gaps, overhangs, or exposed edges. We only work in clean, dust-controlled environments to prevent debris from getting trapped under the film, which is typically the most common cause of bubbling and distortion with amateur tint jobs.

No Peeling, Bubbling, or Uneven Edges: When tint is applied incorrectly, you’ll see the signs of failure within days or weeks. From peeling corners or uneven coverage to visible seams, and moisture that never fully evaporates. A professional tint installer minimizes these risks, so your film adheres cleanly across the entire surface of the glass.

Backed by a Manufacturer Warranty: At Goldwing Autocare, we use premium XPEL window films, which come with a manufacturer-backed lifetime warranty for any install that leaves out facilities. So you’re protected from any chance of peeling, bubbling, discolouration, or adhesive failure. Definitely not something you’d get with a DIY kit or that mobile installer you found on Marketplace.

Expert Product Matching and Legal Guidance: Professionals don’t just slap film on your windows and call it a day. They make calculated decisions regarding film types and shade and how they work for your specific goals, lifestyle, legal limits and vehicle. Whether your goal is maximum heat rejection, enhanced privacy, or a subtle factory look, an expert installer or sales team will guide you through your decision while ensuring full compliance to provincial regulations.

Peace of Mind: Ultimately, the greatest thing a professional installation offers over DIY or that guy off Kijiji: peace of mind. Knowing the job was done right, with high-quality materials, tools, and years of experience. No surprises, and no need to fix any costly mistakes later.
